I’m writing this diary for Dem and Mighty Fluffy the Great because they need help from the community again! The power at Dem’s apartment in Texas has been out since 2:15 AM and he has no heat and very little food left. He also has no money to try to find an hotel — with a generator — and no transportation, even if he could get out of his apartment parking lot or make it out on the roads. He could also use flashlights, batteries or candles. Dem was totally unprepared for this cold and even lost one of his gloves when he went to the pharmacy to pick up his medication over the weekend (before the snow hit).
For those who are not familiar, Dem is nearing the end of his long journey back from substance abuse. Here are his own words describing this situation from a previous diary — “Thank you all for your kindness and encouragement and support as I work to get to zero in my substance abuse rehabilitation program. I could not have made the progress we as a team together have made ! I am completely isolated in my apartment. Because I was in an abusive relationship for a long time, my communication with family and friends was cut to zero. Outside of Daily Kos online, I am completely alone. l don’t have anybody I see in person. My medication makes me extremely nauseous and vomit every single day. It gives me insomnia. I have only slept three straight hours continuously six times in over two years. I am normally a public school teacher and I tried to return to teaching, but I was too sick too often to and realized that I could not continue. This has made me unable to work. I reduce two milligrams every two weeks. I am determined to get to zero so that I can get a normal life back!
I know that everyone is facing many challenges right now and I would not be asking for help for Dem if we had been able to come up with any other ideas. I am writing this during my lunch hour, so I will be somewhat time-limited this afternoon but I will check in as much as possible. Dem would love to be able to help but he is down to very little battery left on his phone so I promised to give this my best effort !
